Watched this one last night… Boxing is brutal especially during the great depression when it’s your only means to support your family…
Cinderella Man surprised me, it was actually good. I had no doubts about Paul Giamatti as he is a fantastic actor and plays his parts well. Russell Crowe also did a fine job playing the all-american new jersey depression era (boxing) hero. Beyond the hard hits and occasional boxing blood, this movie makes you really feel good! I’m not sure why Russell Crowe is not nominated for Best Actor (bumped because Terence Howard is the wildcard… hustle and flow, wtf is that?) Paul Giamatti is nominated for Supporting and he does deserve it. Renee Zelweiger (why does she have to squint all of the time?) would’ve been easily replaceable with any other actress and you wouldn’t have noticed a difference (except for the squinty eyes!)
Opie’s a good director and he did well with this depression era movie, it looked and felt authentic. The movie is a bit long and maybe could’ve done with less blood but it still was enjoyable and it deserves the title for the 2005 all-american feel good movie.
I liked this one! I thought the era was awesome, really felt like I was in a different time. I also like how he is responsible for himself, and he does anything he can for his family. Without giving anything away, I also like how he can return stuff after he’s been blessed.
It’s hard to imagine that millions of people struggled through the depression, but now people who can’t afford cable are “suffering.”

Maybe Cinderella Man would’ve been nominated for more Oscars had it contained a leftist political or social message. Damn these good movies with traditional values!

Exactly. The whole movie HE was responsible for his family, not the government. He got back in the ring for his family. He took some handouts for his family, but he never relied on them. It was a total last resort, and when he could he handed it back.
