I ran across this a few weeks back, forgot about it, now I remembered and here you are.
It was made by Sky who broadcasts the new episodes in the UK. According to Sky it cost a lot of money to produce, took quite a while to shoot, and was originally going to be released to promote the new season but they decided it would be more effective if they released it on the internet. It’s pretty cool and mostly true to the animated version although there are a few minor differences [and a regional goof]. It makes you wonder how different the show would be if they actually filmed a live action movie or episode.
Update: Tune in this sunday as they will show this during the 8pm simpsons on FOX.
I’m guessing the actors would have a difficult time getting down the comedic timing of the cartoon. I bet the cartoonists can time stuff out really well for maximum impact, but with actors and a director it’s a little more of a crapshoot.

I wouldn’t mind seeing one episode filmed live, I agree though being able to animate the show does have its advantages… some day we’ll eventually get the simpsons movie we’ve been promised for the last 10+ years!
