Ordinarily the mention of the word cirque du soleil in combination with me saying: “hey that sounds like fun” would cause me to burst into a flames, grow a thin pencil line mustache ultimately transforming me into gay French-Canadian (I kid, I love Canadians!)
Lori and I saw the cirque show Love at the Mirage. We spent Sunday and Monday night at the Mirage in Las Vegas with the intention to have a few days away and to see the Love show. I had a great time and I must say this show was awesome and is hard to describe and even when you hear the music or see videos of it you can’t appreciate it.
Visually it was beautiful with a mix of multimedia, color, fun props, characters and live action performers performing crazy acrobatics choreographed to the music of The Beatles. It was often visually overloading (in a good way) and you could focus on many different areas. The show lasts about an hour and a half but you really don’t notice it and leave feeling good not like they missed something.
The audio was simply amazing! This is what originally sparked my interest as they (original Beatles longtime engineer and his son) took original tracks from the Beatles songs and re-mixed them to produce a multi channel soundtrack and added special emphasis where needed. I’ve had the CD/DVD package since Christmas and I was impressed. Though until you experience it live with the stage and room effects you just can’t appreciate it. Each seat in the theater had 3 speakers in them along with the many speakers above you really produced a huge spatial sound that was almost overwhelming (also in a good way).
The hotel has embraced this show and the idea behind it (translated: merchandising opportunities) and created a cool entrance to the the theater that is super well themed along with the box office a the very cool Beatles boutique chock full of Beatles stuff you could buy. It’s Vegas, you have to expect that! But they did a super awesome job with the look (the ever changing lighted colorful walkway) and the fact that they play Beatles songs in that area doesn’t hurt either. There were tons of Beatles fans all over the hotel wearing their shirts and dressed like they still were cool it was just a good feeling being there.
Just down the way from the theater they built a club called Revolution which after 12pm they serve drinks and play techno/dance cover versions of Beatles songs. The outside of the club wall is actually made of large letters spelling out R E V O L U T I O N (think California Adventure esplanade) they are black and light up hot Pink and then at night (pretty late) they have girls dressed up as Go-Go dancers who dance in the letters.
Overall it was a great few days to spend away with Lori in super hot Las Vegas. My flight was a bit delayed but beyond that there were nothing but good times. We walked the strip, ducked in some hotels, ate dinner, hung out in the room, hung out in the awesome mirage pool (still one of my favorites), saw a show and even gambled a little. Sometimes you plan things with the best of intentions and they just don’t turn out right other times things go just as you planned. In this case things turned out so much better than I was expecting them to be. I really only chose the time to go, the hotel and the show we were to see… but the little (extra Beatles) details really made it all very special for Lori and I and was just something that I couldn’t have planned if I had tried.
