Saturday, I installed the latest version of the Mac OSX 10.5, aka Leopard. I had the unique opportunity during the installation process to work on a new laptop with Vista on it. The Vista laptop has a processor that is .24 GHZ faster than my Mac Book Pro… Speedwise my Mac Book Pro is quite a bit more responsive… I guess it’s goes without saying Vista sure is one bloated piece of software.
After I removed a bunch of unnecessary programs and *fixed* all the fancy wanna be OSX graphics and animations the laptop ran much better. By this time my Leopard install/upgrade was long done leaving me time to spend with my new operating system while the Vista process drag on.
One thing is for sure with OSX is you put the disc in, launch the application, reboot the computer and run the upgrade then reboot. After it boots back up into 10.5 you connect to software update, update software and that’s it, you’re DONE!
Vista OTOH required NUMEROUS reboots to accomplish many first install tasks, then NUMEROUS reboots to remove all the garbage. When will microsoft get it right?
The few improvements I’ve noticed with Leopard are nice and the system still runs fast and feels good out of the box! There are some UI and file system managment improvements. I haven’t had a chance to setup Time Machine but i’ll get to it soon.
This is not a very technical review but I enjoyed the side by side comparison with Vista and Leopard. I guess i’m now finally converted over to Mac and I don’t see myself going back to Vista or any future Windows operating system. Now, If only 3DSmax and AutoCAD would release their Applications for OSX!
